record size turtles

wayne13114 Jun 25, 2005 07:38 AM

I was wondering how the measure turtles, I believe it is from the shell right, I'm asking b/c I recently found a adult female spotted turtle (clemmys guttata) that is 5 1/2 inches long from tip of the shell to the back. I've heard the record size of this species is 5 inches and want to know what to do to get it verified if it is a record size
thanks wayne

Is this "straight line" or following the curve of the shell?

Record turtles are measured by a straight line from front of shell to the back. I have had 2 kansas state record turtles- common snapping turtle and false map turtle. If you believe you have a record size turtle, I would contact Joseph T. Collins- of the Center for North American Herpetology-
