I have a question for Purdue

Sonic Jun 25, 2005 09:27 AM

Upper Front - 46 5/8 x 9in
Lower Front - 46 5/8 x 3in
Top - 48 x 24 in
Bottom - 48 x 24.75in
Back Support - 1 x 1 x 29in
sides (2) - 24w x 29h in
back - 48 x 21in
false ceiling (4) - 1 x 1 x 23.25in
Window track - 45in long (Rockler.com or HIC)
Upper Lower Moulding - 41.5in long
Side Mouldings - 24in long x 2.25in wide
corner medallions (4) - 3.5in x 3.5in
hardware cloth - 24in x 48in (for false ceiling)

Materials:
3/4in birch plywood
Wood glue
Wood Screws
Wood putty (optional)
Water based polyeurothane
liquid nails (for bypass door track)
Casters (6) - optional (weight rating depends on what you plan to put on top of the cage)

That's the cut list for the cage you built for archimedes. Is all of it plywood?

And how much weight can Archie's enclosure hold? Could it hold another one like it on top?

Thanks.

Today I have to go out and get pricing done.

Also: I got that job!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sorry, I didn't check the forums this past weekend.

These are Plywood - I used Birch plywood so that it would be furniture quality:
Upper Front - 46 5/8 x 9in
Lower Front - 46 5/8 x 3in
Top - 48 x 24 in
Bottom - 48 x 24.75in
sides (2) - 24w x 29h in
back - 48 x 21in

These were 1x1 pieces of wood I had cut to size:
Back Support - 1 x 1 x 29in
false ceiling (4) - 1 x 1 x 23.25in

Window track:
Window track - 45in long (Rockler.com or HIC)

These I got at my local Lowes:
Upper Lower Moulding - 41.5in long
Side Mouldings - 24in long x 2.25in wide
corner medallions (4) - 3.5in x 3.5in

This you can find most places - It is like a REALLY stiff screen for a door:
hardware cloth - 24in x 48in (for false ceiling)

I would not be very comfortable just putting another one of these on top of it. I think you would need some more supports, otherwise it would sag. I could not figure out how to make two on top of eacher in a way that everyone on the "cage building forum" thought would work. I did have a second design I took to a woodright, and he figured out how to do it, but I never found out what it was. (I opted to build this design myself instead of paying him the $900 to build the other one). It seems to me that if you were willing to have a couple of 1 x 1 supports in the middle of the cage, placed directly over casters, that those would add enough strength to build another one on top. Remember that the supports would obviously have to go all the way to the top, and not stop at the false ceiling.

I am NOT a carpenter though, this was actually my first carpentry project, so you would probably want to ask around about that.

I hope that helps!

Elizabeth

I was planning on putting the middle supports in anyways just in case. You can never be too careful.

I might not put a tank on top of the other. I'm not quite sure yet.

I'm building cages for 2 mali uromastyx, 2 bearded dragons and the new 7 month old egyptian I will be getting from doug dix.

I'll make it work some how.
