Toads as snake food

Keith Hillson Jun 25, 2005 09:56 AM

Here at work we are overrun by baby toads that just morphed out, literally thousands of them. Anyway I was gonna take 10 or so and freeze them for my baby Easterns when they hatch. My Easterns are notorious for being problematic feeders. They only want baby snakes and thats not always an easy thing to get. I was wondering if they would eat the toadlets and if so are they toxic to Kings? Im not willing to risk it unless I get some good feedback from people who have observed them eating them in the wild or have done it themselves in captivity. These are common toads from here in S. Wisconsin by the way of that helps.

Don't really know for sure about the kings, but I am grabbin' up some freshly morphed s. toads for my baby hognose and garters. My nerodia eat them as well with no problems.
email me asap.

I've used toads to feed plenty of garters, and a couple of ringnecks would take them as well. I've never even heard of a king eating a toad?

Keith I could hook you up with some feeder snakes man, just let me know what you need.

My first w/c eastern, I tried a toad he wouldn't touch it. Tried with others same results. Iv'e never had a eastern that would turn down a mouse or rat. The one eastern I now, have had over 20yrs will still take a rat even during shed.

You must have never hatched out any Easterns as they are notoriously picky babies. Probably more so for the northern type animals then the Easterns from the south. They want baby snakes and they usually want em alive. Once an Eastern gets going on rodents though they eat like champs.

Iv'e only worked with W/C, never hatched any out. Up until about 10yrs. ago I could go out any early morning or late afternoon and pretty much have my pick. All the new houses and shopping centers changed all that. They are few and far between now.
