Temerature control in a vivarium

dougl4422 Jun 25, 2005 11:58 AM

I have a 30 gallon terraium with expanded clay pellet substrate. I an using a 65 watt compact flourecent light on it. I have a small external canister filter that pumps over some driftwood to make a waterfall.

I plan on housing dart frogs in it. I have been monitoring the temperature and humidity. The humidity stays high enough but the temperature can get up to about 85. Ive read that, for dart frogs, the temperature should be kept between 70 and 80.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the temperature below 80? Should i modify my light to incorparate a small fan to try to keep it cool?

Where are you measuring the temp at? There can be quite a temp difference between the top and bottom of the tank.

I would recommend lifting the lights off the tank a few inches. Although some would not agree with me, I think those lights are unneeded and can be a heat hazard. I just use shop lights with daylight bulbs.
