New To Lizards...Need a little Help

ImNotEhPunk Jun 25, 2005 02:04 PM

I just bought my first two collared Lizards. A female(Meako) and a Male (Ero). Meako is already pregnant and I'm pretty sure I can handle the birthing from everything I've read. I am having a problem though. She keeps running around and jumping at the Light. Ero has only done it once. She's constantly doing it and clawing on the glass. I think it might be the design of my vivarium. If anyone can think of anything that will help. Or sharing pictures of what your Vivaruims look like would help alot.

Also anything else you might think is helpful.

almost all collared lizards will do that in any new cage. my cage is pretty large but mine still jumped at the glass and lights. give them some time they will evetually stop. unfortunately it might take them a little longer than other lizards to figure that out, but they will.

Hello, and welcome!

I think you've found the best place on the web for support with collared lizards. You made a great choice in getting collareds. Of all the lizards I have kept over the years, they are my favorites. They're such charming little critters.

I am not surprised at the apparent condition of the lizards you got, but I am little worried. I have seen a few look pretty rough at pet shops before, and have even bought them just to make sure that they got proper care. Did yours come from a pet shop? Ero looks pretty sick to me. My first suggestion would be to get them both to a qualified vet who has experience with reptiles ASAP. It is probable that they have parasites, and most likely have not been housed under optimal conditions for a while.

Though I am sure that you will "meet" Eve soon (if you haven't already), I do want to refer you to her website for the specifics on collared care.

Best of luck with your new charges.

They appear to be wild caughts, they should settle down soon as far as the jumping to the top, some take longer than others to stop. Some make a mess out of their noses, continually banging them on the top.

I agree with Elan, your new male looks like he needs some extra attention. He seems (in the pic) to be a bit thin. Some wc's refuse to eat or eat sparingly when you first get them. It's more difficult acclimating them.

I would have fecals done on them to check for worms/ parasties.
make sure he is eating and does not lose weight. If he were to keep losing weight, you have to open his mouth and feed him. But thats ONLY if he is NOT eating.

Sure hope they do great for you, Female looks nice and plump in pic, pretty! Any questions, give us a holler, many terrific people here always willing to try and help!

The pet store I got them at breeds all of their reptiles themselves and is pretty notable for having healthy animals. I've seen him eat. a few times. So I know he is and his fecal matter isn't runny and has the white urates. And he is more active now.

real healthy, thats what we all want to see in our pets

I do not dispute your reply as far as he breeds his own and is known for healthy animals, I just though he looked very thin in the picture.

It's good hes active, and great he's eating too ! One thing to note if he did have worms they do not always have running bowel movements.

I treat mine a couple times a year, as they can even get parasites from the crickets we feed them. And I always notice they gain weight after.

Your female is gravid I hope all goes well and you get some NICE eggs !
