Does anyone use an air purifier in their snake room?

Nokturnel Tom Jun 25, 2005 03:55 PM

A few years back a company was doin a display at a show in Houston and it was very impressive. Unfortunately I do not think that company exists anymore and all the ones I see fall short in comparison. There is[or at least was] a long running ad in Reptiles mag for one claiming to not only elminate odors but harmful bacteria in the air. This is the type I am hoping to score but I do not want to buy one without knowing it is worth the dinero. The better models are at least a few hundred bucks. The ones I see on TV and in stores just won't cut it. A salesman at Sears was even honest enough to tell me that....so does anyone know of one which would be able to handle the smell and possible cooties floating around in a seriously stocked reptile room? Tom, have you seen the infomercial for the Orrick air purifier? Don't know about it but they do make a hand held vac that can suck up a bowlin' ball! My boss had one and we used it for years to suck up small construction debris.

Hi Tom

I've wondered about the same topics also. The ones that I have seen at the reptiles shows here in CA were called Living Air Purifiers and they are about the same price range like the ones you mentioned. I've cheked ebay and they sell quick and even sell for a couple of hundred dollars used. I've also wondered about the Ionic Breeze Quadra units which are also in the same price range. Both units claims to electrostaticly charge the air particles and they get stuck on the ceramic/glass or metal collection devices. I'm also curious if the charged air would have any impact to reptiles. I haven't really found a herper that have used these units to get some input. If you do hear anything please let us know. Thanks

When I am not listening to the devil music known as metal I listen to AM Talk Radio LOL. I recently heard some crazy talk that even the best purifiers somehow create different impurities in the air so in a sense the effort was futile??? As if it was not hard enough to make a decision....The company I saw the demo from was Eco Quest with thier Living air models[their entire catalog was interesting] but the local rep here never returned my calls or emails???? We all know how bad one undiscovered uneaten pinky or even worse a regurge can smell. I would like to find something to help keep the air clean for my animals...and my family Tom Stevens

I know someone that has air purifers in there house and snake room. I'm not sure what the brand name is but it doesn't really help with odors. They got them for the cats and placed them by the litter boxes but you can still smell the cat piss. I was contenplating the idea myself until my friend got some and i realized there not worth the cash. He bought 4 , 1 bye each litterbox (2 of them ) 1 in the liveing room and 1 in the snake room. If you get one make sure you have a trial and 100% money back guarentee to make sure it works to your standerds. Paul

When I talked with my friend about getting an air purifier, he suggested an HEPA filter that has a UV light source in order to be effective against mold spores and other pathogens. I really have no idea what that means though.

Hepa filters are an air filter that filters out particles down in the point micron stage. For example the human hair is about 50 to 100 microns wide. There great and expensive filters but in a home enviroment where its not controlled they will plug up real fast. They were designed for controlled enviroments like operateing rooms and clean rooms whitch are fabe where they construct microchips. Also to assist the filters in getting molds and such out you would need a scrubber and there all industrial size that i know of. Hope this clears that up a lil for you Paul
