Rescuing the biggest boa ever...

Doug T May 17, 2003 10:50 AM

Ok, I know the header sounds sensational, but here's a quick rundown of what's going on here.

My wife and I have a friend who is a police officer nearby. He paged us to tell us he may need some help placing a very large snake before it gets euthanized. The snake was found in a house that was abandoned by some "Illegal Drug Enthusiasts".

He first told us it was a large python. Animal control and the local Animal Welfare group, that has agreed to house the animal for a "Short" period of time, says that it isn't a python, but a boa. I haven't seen the snake in question yet, so I can't tell for sure what it was. I can say this much, it's pretty big.

It took 3 people to carry it to the case it was being carried off in, and 2 people to lift the box once the snake was in it. Animal Control Estimates 100 + lbs and 14 feet long. Now a python of this size isn't any special story. A Boa constictor of this size is reaching record length.

So my question is what is the biggest boa out there? I know the San Diego Zoo has (had?) one that was over 13 feet. I've heard of a private breeder that had one that size, but pictures were never posted.

Honestly, I'm kind of hoping the snake is just a python. Because if it's a monster Bci, I may be just too tempted to try to adopt it. I'll be going out to see the snake in a couple hours...with a digital camera.

So tell me folks, what's the biggest BC you know of?

Doug

Thats my guess. Let us know! We are all waiting to find out!

It was just another abandoned big burm...

The first animal welfare employee was an ophidiophobe and wrongly identified the snake...but then her coworkers saw it and properly identified it as a burmese python.

So no near-record sized boas seen today.

They are not going to put it to sleep are they? Shouldn't they try to find it a home before they resort to that? I'm sure someone would want it if they only knew it was available. Please try posting in the burm forum for a home for it if they will allow you to. I'd hate to hear it didn't have a chance just because it was abandoned by some stupid people.

Sorry, reread your origanal post and caught the "placing it before it was put to sleep" part, that I missed the first time I read your post. Should have known that someone on the herp forum would already be doing the best they could to save any snake and find it a new home.

Very stupid of me, my apologies,
gaylynn
