my turtle had his tail bitten!!!!!

dumblond81 Jun 25, 2005 09:26 PM

i have three turtles, two female red eared sliders, and i adopted a male pastel red eared slider about 2 months ago. Im not certain of his age, but he appears to be two, b/c my others are two and they he is the same size as them. When i woke up this morning, my one femal had my pastel by the tail, and wouldn't get off. I finally seperated them, but his tail was bitten. I have him in a small 20 gallon tank for right now, being that was the only empty tank i had in my house, and i bought repti wound-healing aid from the store today, and i have been using this on him. I have the two females in a 90 gallon tank, and i wanted to put up a divider, so i can put the male safely back into the tank when he is healed. I bought one of the tank dividers from the pet store, but there are little holes in it, and their nails kept getting stuck in the holes. Does anyone have any ideas how to seperate the tank, or why she might have bit his tail, or anything else i can use on his tail. Anything will be helpful.

Thanks

Hi,

If the injury to his tail isn't too severe, then I would just try using some povidone iodine solution on his tail. Just give him some time out of the water (a couple of hours) or maybe just a VERY shallow area in which has very little water. Keep his water clean, and keep up on his proper temps, diet, etc., and he will be just fine. Also, I am not familiar with this type of "repti wound" treatment that you are using, but not all things "specially formulated" for use with reptiles is good. I would be very selective on the types of treatments that you use from common pet stores, JMO.

Hope this helps,

Chris
