Power feeding Black Milksnakes

Joeycoco98 Jun 25, 2005 10:05 PM

I would like for my Black Milk to gain size as quickly as possible. I am feeding small meals as recommeded however, can I power feed smaller meals to help him gain size as quickly as possible?

Thanks for any responses!

This is a bad idea, particularly with black milksnakes. They will quickly become obese. These are snakes that fare better at cooler temperatures with less frequent feeding.

If you aren't patient enough to wait 4 years or so, you might want to try some other taxon.

Just my experience/opinion.

Thanks for the reply Chris. It is not an issue of patients, it is a issue of having my first milksnake ( all my other snakes are Kings). I am posting on this forum to learn as much as I can about my new Black Milksnake, there is not much information in print or on the web about them. So understand that I am taking what I know about kings and trying to apply that where I can on the Milksnake. What I don't know or have questions on leads me to post here.

Thanks again,

Somewhere on their VPI website, Dave and Tracy Barker have a good caresheet on the Black Milksnake. Try finding that and giving it a once over.

He and some others here have a lot more experience with BMs than I do. I think they are one of the coolest animals out there. I wish it didn't take so long to get completely black animals. I have 03's,04's and an adult 2000'. The only one so far COMPLETELY black is the 2000' male, and what a cool animal he is.Definite "pet" material whether your looking for that or not. Good luck,You can always grab some very dark Mex. Black kings to quench your "Black snake" thirst and put the gaigeae on the back burner and let it get to be a spectacular animal in it's own time. Later..

Again, thanks for all the replys. Really my only concern with this guy at this point is geting him off pinkies, my mice are not producing that well lately, so having to buy pinks. just want to get him on larger food items as quickly as possible. The color change while interesting is not my primary focus. I actually enjoy his tri-band stage a lot, I think it is very pretty. I set his tank up to me more "mountain like" The humidity is a bit elevated and I put some fake plants for a bit of ground cover. and no added heat just the ambient room temp which is around 75 during the day and upper 60's to low 70's at night, not that big of a change. So far so good.
