Large wild Timber Rattlesnake

SalS Jun 25, 2005 10:59 PM

I found this massive timber (canebrake) rattlesnake in central Alabama. It was bigger than most I've seen in zoos! For a size reference, the hook in the picture is 5 inches long. I'm guestimating he was about 5 to 5 1/2 feet long.

He didn't strike or try to run, but rattled (very loud I might add) constantly, even when I walked back to my truck to change film.

Its good to see some big ones are still out there!

The few timber's I've seen in zoo's (chicago/milwaukee area and minneapolis) are much smaller than what I expected. I haven't been lucky enough to find one in the wild. Is there a size variance from north to south? In the photo gallery is an awesome pic with a guy holding one at face level and it extends near the ground. 5-6 feet unless the guy was a midget
