saved MHD from neglect- very thin- help!

teresaseb Jun 25, 2005 11:11 PM

bps516 is my husband, so you can reference his post about our caging issues, but thats not my biggest concern at the moment. The co-worker that I got her from has not been caring for her(?) very well at all. when I picked her up yesterday I think it was the first time that she had eaten in almost a month- needless to say she is very thin. yesterday she ate 4 crickets and 7 mealies. today I hand-fed her 8 wax worms. cleaned the (too small) cage and took her for a swim. have her humidity up to 70 (it had never been above 50 before), and temp. is 80. also have a uv light on her for the first time in her life. any suggestions on fattening her up and anything else? I've added a few pictures...

definitely add some real branches to the tank. Yes the tank is small but just giving her some branches to actually climb on will make her much happier and give her more of a reason to want to eat. From where she is in the pictures it looks like she really wants to climb.
As for feeding to fatten her up a little bit. Go to a wal-mart or a place around you that sells fishing supplies and get a package of nightcrawlers. Nightcrawlers are really good food for these guys because they have a lot of calcium, and they really love them. That is mostly all my dragons wanted to eat. They aren't too expensive, about 10 cents a piece usually and the dragon will only eat 1 or 2 a day.
For the tank being too small, if your husband is good with building things I have drawn up how to build your own 4' x 3' x 2' enclosure for about $100. email me at joebradbury@gmail.com if you are interested in building the dragon a new home. It's not too difficult, just time consuming.

Good luck!

Joe

There isn't much I can add to what Joe has already told you. The dragon, as you stated, does look very thin. But, it looks like it still has a good chance. Nice pattern and colors. I am guessing female from your straight onto the back photo and if I am right that is an outstanding crest for a female.

Give her the right care, sounds like you have already started with that, and a little bit of weight and she will be a beautiful animal!

Post any time you have questions! As Joe said, nightcrawlers.

Not only is our MHD looking better but as an added bonus, after 14 years of marriage, you two helped me find possibly the ONLY animal that grosses my wife! Earthworms are a god-send!
