Interesting Suboc...

Nathan Wells Jun 26, 2005 01:16 AM

Here is a picture of a very interesting suboc I found on a recent outing in West Texas looking for L. alterna. Myself and a few friends found this nice orange colored suboc coiled up in the road 25 miles south of Alpine on 6/11 right at sundown. He was a really nice looking animal but what really caught my eye was the odd brindle colored tail he had and the small pure white spots that stood out. Piebald? possibly?
Unfortunately, he had taken a hit from a car and died about 20 hours later. I did keep him, however, and he will soon become a member of the TCWC in College Station.
Just thought I would share..

WOW! Do you have any full body shots, that color is also rather interesting. Maybe calico? Too bad about its fate, keep looking in that area, you never know, there may be another.

Dang, that's tough. It definitely had some interesting stuff going on.

The interesting brindle pattern aside, the white patch could be more than a genetic trait. Genetic, something incubation-related or injury, and good luck sorting it out... However, it never ceases to amaze me the talent with which wild animals can hurt themselves.

There was an Okeetee orange suboc found in that area many years ago. It was pretty big, so no one took it, just looked at it and let it go on it's way. It was seen on several passes. The next night it bacame a DOR. It's a shame that it or this one didn't get into a breeding program.

When did they start finding subocs in the Okeetee Hunt Club region of South Carolina(...and orange ones at that)? LOL
I have an orange suboc, but he is Panther Canyon(TX) locality.
Hehe. I am sure that was just a misprint. Peace out.
