Sick leo, been to vet still not eating.

jgika Jun 26, 2005 09:40 AM

Hi all.. I have a sick leo. it turns out she had a bunch of infections and parasites as well as eggs inside of her. She was my breeder last year but has not been near a male since. I know they can become gravid without a male but this is a little differet. A few months ago she stopped eating. We took her to the vet who hospitalized her for 4 days. We have had her back for about 3 weeks now. She still goes for shots every 3-4 days but isnt eating on her own. Now she finally passed one of her eggs a week or so ago and still has another one in there. i am thinking that this is why she still might not be eating on her own. I do warm soaks for about 20-30 minutes and force feed her baby food or mashed up mealworms.

Its frustrating that she still will not eat. She has more energy than she did prior to the vet, but she still looks very emaciated.

Has anyone been throught hsi before? Have any suggestions? I will do anything to have her start eating on her own!

Jon

wow, please dont force feed your leo. Its stresful enough being gravid and force feeding just adds the stress. Once in a while a leo will produce unfertile eggs, its nothing uncommon. Just stop force feeding and offer her food every day.

I do not think you understand the situation. She would die without force feeding. She was being soaked and force fed by the Vet hospital. it was a necessity if she was goign to live.
bottom line she was not in good shape, still isnt...

Sometimes it takes reptiles a long time to come around again after they are sick.

If she is going to the vets every few days for anti-biotic shots this is another stressor on top of everything else so she may not eat until the shots are done. How much longer do you have?

You said she had an infection, eggs, and parasites, did she get dewormed for the parasites? If so, when is her second deworming?

I would continue force feeding her babyfood w/ calcium and maybe some mashed up insects if she can keep them down and just continue to support her. After the anti-biotics are done and the parasites are all gone (sometimes it takes 2 or 3 dewormings before their appetite picks up again) she should hopefully begin to turn around a little better. Until then just continue doing what you are doing, periodically offer live food (leave in a dish or dangle it in front of her with tweasers) to see if she will start eating on her own.

Good luck!

Thanks for your input. She is going through a cycle of 8 shots... One every 3-4 days. The list was pretty extensive of the issues she was having so I am not quite sure what it was for but I think it was for a parasit eof some sort. She does poop normally now which means that some of the force feeding must be doing it's job. I have tried leaving in live food as well as dangling food in front of her but she just turns her head away and closes her eyes. in other words not interested.

I gotta run to the vet now.

Thanks agian for your help!

Double check with the vet next time you are in that she got dewormed...sometimes the dewormer can help increase appetite as well
