Beautifull snakes! Is the males biting of the females neck part of the mating "rituall?"

That's pretty common in the reptile breeding world. The males are pretty tough on the females sometimes. I've seen cases in lizards where the male actually opens up the skin of the female. Check out this pic of my Shinisaurus breeding this year. Talk about rough sex! Ouch!
