Flexwatt Question?

lgehrig4 Jun 26, 2005 02:32 PM

How long should a strip of flexwatt be before you consider connecting another power cord? I just built a rack and I figured that I need about 18ft of heat tape to thread through the sheves. I would like to just connect one cord, but I was wondering if that would be a fire hazard or if the area closer to the cord would be hotter than the other end?

thanks
jeff

A portable hair dryer uses far and away more power than 18ft of even the most power-hungry Flexwatt. You need not worry about the power cord. 18ft x 20Watts/ft = 360 Watts.

By the way, the current moves through the cord... it would not heat up in one end only.

Using a thermostat or controller will further reduce the wattage actually used.

first, thanks for your reply. I'm not concerned about the cord heating up, but I was wondering if the flexwatt would heat up unevenly due to the length? I assume from your answer that it would be pretty even.

thanks again

Sure the flexwatt woudl heat even... I would put yout tstat probe in the middle of the length of the element...
