Taming an Adult Tokay and joining a Herp. Society - Help!

jacarandas Jun 26, 2005 02:57 PM

First off, I'm new to the site so I'd appreciate making friends, especially those who are as interested in geckos as I am (I'm also a huge ball python and rat snake fan), so feel free to message me anytime.

Secondly, I purchased a beautiful two-year-old female tokay about six months ago or so, and things have been going very smoothly. When researching tokays, it was obvious they were highly aggressive creatures, so it just never crossed my mind to try and handle Nell (my tokay). But now I've become curious, and I'd appreciate some suggestions on "how to make the first move," so to speak.

And finally, I'm located in Southern New Jersey, and aside from joining a 4H club I haven't been able to locate any herp groups around here that I could become active in. So if anyone can aid me in that respect, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks so much!

welcome to the Tokay club ,
Some will take to some handling and most won't. For starters Tokays don't like to be restrained which is what most people do in fear of being bitten. My suggestion is to take your Tokay out for short periods of time and let it loose on your arm without holding it. This is best done at first in a area that is pretty safe to recapture if it jumps off you. Keep your hands in its view and dont reach for it from behind. move your hands slowly toward it without touching to get it used to you and your hands. if you notice it starting to breath hard, back off, return to tank and try again the next day. The idea is to get the Tokay to learn you are not a threat to it and going to hurt it. be very careful when removing and putting back in tank to not stress it. good luck
