Leaches (?) in the snake's terraruim

Gunilla&Molly Jun 26, 2005 03:36 PM

Today after our 3-year-old milksnake had shedded its skin and we were going to clean its terrarium we found lots of small leaches or whatever they were. They were all over its shedded skin and also on the bottom of the terrarium as well as stuck on the inside of its ceramic cave. They looked like little slugs and they were crawling like caterpillars. Their color was a light tan and they were around 4-5 mm long. There were probably around 20 of them. Does anyone know what this could have been? We have not found them anywhere else in the house and never seen anything like it. We feed the snake frozen mice. Could it have been a parasite from them? Is there anything we should do? We have had everything out and cleaned it but we are worried where they came from in the first place. Any advice would be appreciated.

They were probably maggots that hatched from flies laying eggs in some uncleaned feces or possibly a food item that wasn't eaten or regurged and hidden.

Clean out the sustrate and clean the cage and furnishings well and there shouldn't be any problem.

What sort of bedding are you using? They sound like flour moth larva. They're harmless but a pest just the same.
