TOO docile?

lele Jun 26, 2005 08:20 PM

Everything about Darwin is great - healthy, growing, lovely Citrus colors coming along. But he is TOO docile. He will not mosey around when I take him out - even outside(!) but just stays in one spot. Have I coddled him and made him a little wuss?? just kidding, but he really is rather inactive. I have not moved him into his big tank yet, but today while I was trying out a setup, I stuck him in there to see how things "fit.” He barely moved. He finally licked a piece of paper towel that I had in there and then moved his basking spot (used the exact same rock, etc. from current setup.

Has anyone else had a docile 4 1/2 month old?? Any suggestions to get him moving, or should I just be grateful he is so trusting (or scared stiff!!?? :-O)

Torque is the same way, the only time he moves is too eat, poop or switch basking sites. Sometimes when we are outside he will actually walk a few paces but usually stays still. He does like to run around in the bathroom though so I let him roam for awhile before a bath, for extra exercise I make his water deep so he has to swim. I think its just a content dragon who knows he has nothing to worry about in life, food falls from the sky and the giant pink claw cleans up the poop, ah... to be a spoiled dragon

haha! giant pink claw!!

I thought water too deep was dangerous in that he could get water in his lungs. Do you have a rock or something forhim to climb up on?

well, i can definitely relate. my spyro is so tame, the kids can hold him in their hands while he lays on his back!! he's calm as could be and very trusting. i let mine swim in a kidie pool out back with 2 inches of water and while i'm setting up the pool all the beardies just sit in the grass. i've never had one try and run away. they like to stay in one place, meaybe munch on my dandelions and clover! i think you have nothing to worry about. this is the one thing, i think, that sets beardies apart from other lizards, their incredible gentle and tame nature. they crack me up!

Yeah, I figured it was more about trust than fear Once he is big enough for his leash maybe he'll run around more when I can take him outside and not have to ride on my shoulder.

I was at a neighbor's house last week discussing her garden so I had to lean down and do some things. Her daughter offered to hold him and he went right to her and stayed on her hand the whole time (she loved it! Michele is a little critter and bug girl! )

That is cool that yours just hang out together on the lawn. I got a bd so I could have a handleable lizard and I sure got one!

thanks for the reinforcement!

My male's the same way, he just loves to sit and stare at the ceiling fan when he's inside. When we're outside he sits on my shoulder or on top of my head just looking around. My female likes to run around but she won't go to far from me. Its really cute because she'll get about a foot away from me and look back like are you coming I want to go. I think they're just spoiled rotten and they know that if they take off that they'll end up some place where they won't get spoiled anymore. Its really amazing what animals know. I have babies at the moment and they know that if they open their mouths at me that they'll get food stuck in their mouths so they're spoiled and lazy too lol.

LOL! fan staring! Darwin definitely has a "space-shot" quality about him. With his black eyes I think it is even harder to "read" him - or always know just what the heck he is looking at! Sometiems I am sure he is looking at me and thne suddenly he moves his eye a fraction and be all surprised that I am there!! ;-/ goof ball!

Yeah, I certainly spoil all my critters. Luna, my cham, has had some health issues so she is doted on and although she will occasionally hiss or show "leave me alone" colors and patterns she is quite the sweetie

I have tried not to spoil Darwin too much, but hey, he is in a household of all girls (2, 4, 6 and 8 legged!) and I think he just knows he can't pull that macho boy lizard crap! hahaha!

I am surprised he even remembers how to walk. You probably carry him everywhere! Ha Ha Ha Ha
I'm just kidding. That dragon has been coddled since birth. I hand water each baby individually with a spray bottle. I take each one out to water them. I have them at work and they only get picked up constantly and hand fed from my fingers between picture framing orders. Even my customers play with them.
Oh just so You know I have 23 babies here and 18 eggs sweating so they are about to hatch. I also have a batch of panther chams hatching. Plus a batch of Veileds ready to go to homes now. Plus a batch of baby cornsnakes that just hatched. That was new for me. Pretty cool actually.
Hey could you post a picture of him so I can send the link to someone that wants to see what my line looks like as they get older.
Thanks, Sonia

Walk? Oh, he's supposed to walk? lol! yeah, coddle is my middle name!

here are two pics I justtook on Saturday. I haven't weighed him for a few days but I am SURE he is well over the 100g mark! He is just a scale or two shy of 12". He just finished a full shed so his colors are really nice right now.

Sonia, I do NOT know how you manage to run your business, care for the animals and sleep...yes, you are supposed to sleep Sorry I have been so bad about email lately. I have about 500 wild silk moth caterpillars that I am trying to keep fed (much like all your babies!) and still have eggs hatching daily. And, like you, I am up in the middle of the night setting out mating cages and taking them down before sunrise so a bird doesn't get a male moth (that my female has called in) for a meal!

Anyway, here is Darwin - and a couple of Luna's namesake
