Please help...possible egg bound female honduran

bdelator Jun 26, 2005 08:36 PM

One of my female hondurans is possibly egg bound. It has been 13 days so far since her last shed and last Friday she laid 2 eggs in the nesting box which both appear to be slugs. I kept those eggs with the female and came back from out of town today expecting to see the rest of the eggs in the nest box. All I saw was the female coiled up in the next box without eggs. Is it too early to assume she is eggbound and if she is, what can I do to save her? At this point, all I want to do is same the female from dying. Thanks, Barin

Does she still appear to be gravid? Slugs are often laid a few days early or late.

She definitely has eggs in her still.

I keep my gravid females warm so they drink lots of water.
This is helpful in facilitating the process. If my animal went 3-4 days after the first eggs were deposited, I would use a syringe to drain the other eggs. I've used it several times over the past 10 years with the female passing the empty shells successfully. If you don't know how try to contact a herp club nearby for assistance, hopefully.

My female is more important than waiting for impacted eggs to move out. As an absolute last resort a vet would be called, in as much as I hate them.

I had the same thing happen last year with a first time bred Nelsoni - she laid 3 slugs 4 days prior to the rest of them. She was not stressed during that interval and the rest came out no problem. Try to be a bit patient here a few more days. If you can monotor her, make sure she gets water or keep her egg box real moist - it helps as noted in the previous post.

It is my opinion that if the eggs are together and near the vent she simply need more time. If they are not and are located up her body a bit then watch to see if they move down - if they don't, she may be bound. Try to hold off about 3-4 more days to see how she does. See if she gets stressed too - if she does, then it is getting time to step in..

As noted on the previous post, if you are so inclined, you can asperate (remove the egg stuff) the posterior egg with a syringe. If not, then call your local vet(s) to see if they are familiar with this procedure. I had a Corn 3 years ago become egg bound and our vet asperated 2 eggs - they passed within 48 hours.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out...
