Virginia Black Rat found today

Steve_Craig Jun 26, 2005 08:56 PM

Took a few pics of a nice looking Black Rat found today at the York River state park. The guy holding him was the one who found him. Always good to meet people that like snakes as much as I do.

I like the last shot in particular, its that cool serpentine shape on pavement that always makes my heart skip a few beats.
Where do you live? Williamsburg? Im in Yorktown, which is just up a hop up I64 to York River State park if Im not mistaken. I've never herped there before, I usually head south instead of north when Im hunting. What other stuff have you found out there?

Hey Tom, I'm Northwest of you up I-64 in New Kent co. I've been a few times this year to the park, and I've found Black Rats, Northern Racers, a few Northern Water snakes, one Dekays, a few Garters, and I have have also found one Brown Water snake, but that was in New Kent co. I'm still looking for that elusive Eastern King

In my youth, I found Mole Snakes, Rlack Rats and Corn Snakes just west of Richmond along the James River. I have found one Eastern King in Virginia Beach swimming across West Neck Creek. You just have to keep looking.

Great Photos!!!

The link is to the Snakesandfrogs.com site where they have a great photo of a Mole King Snake like the ones I found along the James River years ago.
