malnourished tokay gecko

rivethead Jun 26, 2005 10:30 PM

i have adopted a tokay gecko from a local pet store. the gecko came in as a trade in with about 10 other geckoes. he looks to be a few years old and deathfully skinny. the pet store was unable to give the gecko the care it would need to recover so they asked if i would take him since they know i have many animals and another tokay already. the gecko is not eating from my observation. i gave him .75ml or critical care liquid yesterday and today) and that seemed to perk him up today but he is still deathly skinny and i have been unsuccessful in forcefeeding him. i can get him to drink out of my dropper so i was wondering what, if any, kinds of liquid foods i could give him to get him fattened up and hopefully start eating again. i was thinking perhaps a protein rich baby food or something. i will be calling my vet on monday, but i was hoping to get some advice from other people on this matter.

first i would take him to the vet for a fecal check. when my tokay wouldnt eat i just picked it up by the back of the neck and it opend its mouth then i just droped the cricket in its mouth and it snaped it then it fell into the back of its throaght and she swallowed it...heres a pick of how i held her to get her to eat...

it sounds to me like its more dehydrated. keep it drinking plenty of watter and you'll be surprised the weight he will put on from it. he should regain an appitite in time, feeding a dehydrated animal could harm it because it is not realy healthy enough to prosses food. good luck

hi,
thanks for the replies. i have consulted with my vet about the gecko and he suggested using beef baby food to help fatten him up. i have been giving the gecko 1-2 cc's a night of baby food along with either .05cc of Flagyl (sp?) or .75cc of Stimulap and an occasional mealworn or cricket if im lucky.
i have noticed the gecko drinking water from the glass, but i will make sure he gets some water at his feedings every night too (how much?). thanks for the suggestion. the gecko doesnt seem to be gaining any noticable weight, but his tail is not as skinny now (i can't see the bones). he has learned that if he doesnt try to bite me, that i cant get the food dropper in his mouth, so that has been an issue. i hate to stress him out anymore prying open his mouth. any more sugestions would be appreciated. thanks
