Something I've never thought to ask or lookup before, is the whitesided trait in blackrats a wild caught gene, or was it a trait that popped out of other projects and was line bred specifically for that trait?
Thanks,
Ken

As w/ most all mutations, this trait was founded w/ a WC animal. George Muskingum (sp?) coined the name & spent several years outbreeding the bloodline beofre releasing them to other breeders. I saw a pic. circa. Paul Miles) in '94 or '95. A few other breeders have since named them White-sideds which is pretty self explanatory. This trait has since popped up in several other taxa including Kingsnakes, Milksnakes, Blood Pythons, Short-tailed Pythons, Cobras, WDB Rattlesnakes, Boa Constrictors, Rainbow Boas, and more........

Michael, thanks for the reply. We just had some hatch today and it was kind of funny how it never dawned on me to find out more about this trait like I usually do with everything else.
