Swimming dragon...LOL

Jamiesbeardie Jun 27, 2005 10:41 AM

I'm currently nursing my mother's dragon Duchess through a bout of yellow fungus. I'm visiting my MIL's and she has a pool. Because I have already two baby girls, and another male...I have the girls in the enclosure with the whole setup meaning the UVB light and all that. I have my male, who's enclosure is at home (couldn't fit it in the car) in a large rubbermaid witha clamp on light. SO he and this extra dragon spend a lot of time outside in the sun with me tanning. So I'm out there the other day and Duchess (man she is one awesome dragon!) decides she's going for a swim! Cracked me up! She'd bask, go swimming, bask, go swimming. Is the funniest thing.
Question being...is the chlorine anything to worry about? I won't let her go in the big pool anymore if it is, perhap I'll go buy her a wading pool....I think she'll like that.
She must come from some lakeside dragon ancestors...LOL

Aren't dragon's just the cutest when they're swimming? I don't know if the chlorine is an issue, I imagine it could be. I know it stings when I get it in my eyes! What I do is have a kiddie pool set up with a few inches of water. It's great excercise for them How did your mom's dragon get yellow fungus? Was it sold to her like that? Or did it come into contact with an infected one?

Don't really know.....She bought it from a petstore so it could have came from there. Petstores are notorious for having it it seems. and yes, they are absolutely adorable when they swim. I've seen her do it over and over, but I crack up each time. And, she closes her eyes when she swims at least. I'm going to go to walmart today and get a pool...I just don't wanna take a risk it will make her sick. Perhaps get something for an island in the middle....Paradise!
Poor thing...my mom wasn't feeding her right and all that. I said, do you feed her salad. Oh, I give her lettuce (iceburg) and broccoli. I said, um, ok. and I took her. The thing adores me now. I don't want to give her back and I'm trying to convince my mom just to give her to me. She said she's going to sell her, but I said, chances are, no one's going to take care of her as good as I am....esp. if you give her to the place she got her from to start with to sell for her. That pet shop is disgusting! Ugh! I just can't see Duchess doing well there for 5 minutes....Oh welll....I'll keep trying!

Well....I'm glad you got her You seem really caring, which is great! The island in the middle is a good idea. I use a resin-replica basking log. It's cool, swim a little, bask a little, lol. I hope you convince your mom to let you keep Duchess. She should, since the dragon is receiving far better care. You could always throw her a few bucks, I guess. I agree about pet stores. I've been to a few good ones, but most are bad, bad, worse!

Lol, I am going to buy Athena a swimming pool with an island too, great idea. I am SO glad your taking care of her other than your mom, no offense, but you are far better at it. Have fun and keep it up

I would not let them swim in chlorinated water. Chlorine is a poison and can easily make your bearded dragons sick. The concentrations used in pools is much higher than you have in normal drinking water and even then, you should give only de-chlorinated water to your dragon. Getting a wadding pool is the best ideal. Even if you fill it with regular tap water, the wide surface area allows for quick evaporation of the chlorine (fill it about 12-24 hours before putting the dragon in).

Glad you are taking good care of the dragon with yellow fungus. From what I have read about it, it's not an easy disease to treat and often leads to the death of the dragon. I dont' think it's communicable (ie spreads by contact) with other dragons but might be a good ideal to keep her separate from your other dragons. If I recall its caused more by imbalances of gut flora due to parasite treatments than anything else.

I've heard that too...thing is...none of my dragons have been treated for parasites so far...well now I'm giving them parazap, but no vet drugs so far. They all have it...so I don't have to worry about them giving it to each other. I don't know. Yellow fungus is a new thing, and so far...what I've been doing seems to be working. My dragons, well they are much perkier over all (they do have stressed out down moments) but over all, they are getting better every day.
Jamie
THanks for the info on the chlorine....

How come you're giving them Parazap? You shouldn't give them Parazap proactively, you should only give it to them if they get parasites like coccidia and pinworms. Giving them Parazap regularly can cause an imbalance in their systems, and yellow fungus is usually the result. I should know, mine developed it after an aggressive Parazap dosage prescribed by the vet from a bout of coccidia and pinworms.

You can balance the Parazap/Yellow Fungus problem by giving them three drops of Acidophiliz , which adds healthy gut-flora to a lizard's digestive system. Unlike Parazap, Acidophiliz is completely natural, and can be given either straight orally or in a water dish.

Whoops, correction. The treatment was from Albon and Panacur, not Parazap. Getting my meds backwards, sorry.

Glad you corrected that! I was going to pipe in and say that I give parazap to my dragons as a preventive because it IS natural. LOL. 'Sok...we all get a little mixed up sometimes.

yep parazap is good its in combination with the achidophulus bacsils very nice .
i give it every 1,2 months 5 days on a row .
panacure and other medicines can kill the good bacterias and then you need to replace them.
they also called probiotics.
in a human healthy store you can buy capsules and put those in 1/4 glas of water and then give to youre beardie.
btw swimming beardies just loook like crocks
