new crested on the way

jonthefb Jul 14, 2003 06:51 PM

Hello everyone. My name is Jon and I will be receiving my first crested gecko on wednesday it is a red fire morph. i have been doig a lot of research/reading, etc, and had some general questions about set up. I eventually want to get a trio, one male and two females, and am planning on housing htem in a 20 gallon aquarium, with Jungle Mix Lizard Litter as a substrate. i have a ton of branches, vines, foliage, etc...heres my question:
Will i need a heater of any sort, Undertank, basking heat lamp, etc......what should i keep the temp/humidity of the tank at....how often should i feed ( i am planning on using the T-rex diet supplemented with crickets one a week), and what other things should i expect in general? I workat a pet shop and hope to eventually breed these cool guys, but am starting off and want some general opinions on their care!

thanks in advance everyone!
jon

Jon,
I tend to house all my animals individually (less stress on the animals) in 15 gallons. A 20 gallon really is too small for a trio; it is more suitable for a pair at most. For a trio I suggest a 29. Ideal temps should be around 75-78F. I keep it that way 24/7 but drops into the low 70’s at night are fine. Just make sure it is not in the high 60’s for prolonged periods of time or you might see a decrease in appetite. Otherwise if you want some more info just e-mail me and I’ll send you a full guide. Best of Luck.

ok guys, just received the little guy, and man do i mean little hes about 3 inches long max, but the coloration on it is phenomenol...i was planning on putting him in the 20 right away but he is soo small and i have been reading that in larger cages, they have a hard time finding food, so instead i put him in a little 5 gallon critter keeper so that i can observe him and make sure he is doing allright. i put a small layer of lungle mix litter in the bottom of the cage, and some moss and branches for him to climb on......my question is when do you think i should firt try to feed him?
thanks in advance!
