EVENING ADVERTISER (Swindon, UK) 27 June 05 Stumpy the tortoise in a hurry to find his lost home
A traumatised tortoise has been given a new name after losing a leg in an attack.
The Hermans tortoise, which was handed into to a vets in Swindon by a member of the public, is now known as Stumpy.
The male tortoise, which is around seven inches long, lost a back leg after being savaged by either a dog or a fox.
He underwent emergency surgery after being taken to the exotic animal and avian specialists at Great Western Referrals, Shrivenham Road.
They are now appealing for Stumpy's owner to come forward.
It is hoped that surgeons will eventually be able to attach either a prosthetic limb or a wheel to his stump. Stumpy was found in a garden on Mill Lane, Westleaze, on Monday.
Anyone who thinks that the tortoise may be theirs can contact Great Western Referrals on 01793 603800.
Vets found an infected wound and significant tissue damage to his leg.
