How do you know if they have bred?

TheDrew1 Jun 27, 2005 06:53 PM

I have been putting my male and female together and letting them have their privacy for the majority of the day. So how do i know they have bred while i wasnt there? I read that the male lost interest but how does this show? If i pass the female by him, he wont get all puffed up, is that lost interest? Or is it if i introduce them again they wont have any interest ineach other? Also if they bred would the female become unreceptive or would they just keep copulating?

Any advice would be helpful, thanks in advance!

If they are left alone for most of the day over subsequent days, it is very likely she has been bred. Males will try and breed as long as the female is receptive, then pretty much leave them be. I would separate them completely and up the calcium intake of the female and if she doesn't lay eggs in a month or show any other signs of being gravid (ie extended stomach, scratching and digging for nesting sites etc.) put them back together again like you have been doing. copulation itself takes less than a minute so they could have mated many times during the day while you are not watching.
