Crocodile Skinks - Update, with pics!

iwana May 17, 2003 11:17 AM

Hi everyone,

We've had our breeding pair of crocodile skinks for 4 weeks now and today, we had our first real handling session with them. So finally, we are able to show off pics of Loki (male) and Sigyn (female). :-D

This is Loki:

This is Sigyn (right in the middle of a tongue-flick):

Sigyn and Loki together (Sigyn on the left, Loki on the right):

Both seem well acclimated, i.e. feeding and defecating on a daily basis, and each had a shed, but are still spending their entire day hiding in their little cave. Their enclosure is equipped with a fluorescent, but we haven't changed it yet to include the new UVB fluorescent. They only seem to come out at the end of the day to feed and quickly run back to their hide cave.

We are seeing a bit more of them, however. We have surprised Sigyn in the feeding dish a few times recently, as early as 6-7 p.m. when their lights are still on. Loki is the more nervous one of the two and only seems to come out after lights out. Hopefully, both will come out a little more while the lights are on and benefit from some UVB exposure.

Handling them today was a real hoot! Loki kept making these little grumbly-squeaky noises, evidently to express his discontent at being handled. Meanwhile, Sigyn was very alert and excited, exploring my husband's arm. She seems to have fattened up quite a bit in the past four weeks and we suspect that she may be getting ready to lay an egg. We also caught Loki and Sigyn in what seemed to be a "tender moment." *crossing fingers!!*

We really love having these wonderful, fascinating little creatures!! We would love to hear from other people who have crocodile skinks.

Julie, Justin, Loki and Sigyn. (*squeak* *squawk* *QUACK!*)
