Question about sex and incubation

kingofspades Jun 27, 2005 11:28 PM

Ok, some herps have the ability to control sex through incubation temps. Alligators for instance, can determine sex of entire clutches through incubation temps.

Has anyone tested this theory on ball pythons.

Imagine how great it would be to be able to control this.

All males if needed.
All females if needed.

I think it would come in handy big time.

I have heard of mixed clutches incubated as low as 85 and as high as 92. IMHO, BPs just don't work this way.

Yep, the gender chromosomes in snakes have been identified. If I remember right the female is WZ and the male is ZZ so the gender of the babies is determined by whether mom gives them a W or a Z. I believe birds are the same by the way.
