A problem with my Emerald tree [PLEASE HELP]

exoticcollector Jun 28, 2005 04:20 AM

I have a CB three year old male Emerald that about 3 1/2 feet. He lives in a 29 gallon tank with a glass top. On the back of the glass top there is a plastic piece, I put three rolls of holes in it for venting air. I mist him every morning at 11:00 AM, the humidity it's 97%. At 7:00 pm it's 74% the tank never dropes below 74% unless I open the top. I have a big water bowl in the tank with a Duetto 50 submersible power filter in the water bowl. It helps to keep the humidity up. Anways I saw him open his mouth and he had alot of clear goo all over the front of his mouth. About 5 minutes later he blew bubble with the goo. I opened the top and he was wheezing/whistling while he hissed at me. If anyone knows what this is please help me. I think it might be a respiratory infection, but not for sure. No vet around me knows about emeralds.

Thank you for reading

That sounds like a respiratory infection. You should take him to a vet for treatment. If you don't he will probably not survive. 97% is too high, 85% DT is more in the range you need to be. Think about the natural environment. The canopy is much less humid than near the ground in a rainforest.

I took him to the vet at 11 this morning. They said it was a upper respiratory infection. They gave him a shot. I have to bring him back every 2 days to get a shot. I think he needs 3 shots total. What should be the lowest the hummidity should be? Also what is a good wat to get him to eat?

Have you read any caresheets? There are several on various sites that explain in detail. It is very difficult to maintain the balance between humidity and good air circulation in a glass tank. We don't let the RH during the day exceed 85% and at night it drops into the low 70s. As far as eating, antibiotics are generally hard on the kidneys and our vet recommends not feeding until after the treatment is over, depending on the antibiotic. Fortunately we are able to do our own treatments, based on the culture results, with the correct antibiotic. I believe that with fortaz and tolyn(sp)it is ok to feed. With amikacin and gentomycin(sp), no food is recomended. Not sure about batryl as we won't us it.

I have been to alot of caresheets and everyone of them says something different. I know a guy here that don't ever mist him emeralds or green trees. The hummidity stays about 40%. Then a guy i know rico walter only mists his emeralds every 4 days. Almost everyone keeps theres different. I have looked into this snake for about a year and a half, but thank you very much for your help. It was highly apperciated
