ARGH! Ok, POLL: How does everyone separate their meal worms from the oatmeal they're shipped in?!

cherribomb Jun 28, 2005 02:22 PM

Am I missing something?!

I think the majority of meal worms are shipped in oatmeal, right? -- I am SO sick of using tweezers for hours to pick the worms out of the oatmeal. I use a powder/grain gutload for them and once they're on this, its even more annoying to pick them out of this stuff at feeding time.

I've thought about using a sieve but can't think of one that's big enough to separate the worms from the oatmeal/gutload without all the worms falling through too.

I swear I'm going to get arthritis in my thumb and pointer finger from endless tweezing. I've tried using my hands and this definitely doesn't help.

Tell me I'm a moron and there's a better way to do this!

lol I don't. I put them all in my mealies bucket, with sliced potatoes - oatmeal, mealies, and all.

Then how do you get them out of the bins and into the bowls in large quantities at feeding time? It'd be OK if everyone only ate a couple but tweezing out 100 mealies, one or two at a time, takes me forever!

what i have found works REALLY well is using a screen lid for a cage. Use the ones with the finer mesh, not the ones (obviously) with the huge holes in them. All the regular mesh ones i buy at the petstore work perfectly, i just put the lid over a trash can and sift away!

Tweezers???

hehe...

I dig them all out with my hands. I can get a lot at a time that way. I just avoid the beetles.

Use the screen lid from anysized gallon tank ( i have a seperate 10 gallon tank that i put the screen on ) then you just dump them all on it and tap on the screen and all the dust falls through. About 5-7 mealies drop through the screen every 100 but i'd prefer to pick 5-7 mealies out of the dust than picking out 100. Then i just take handfuls of the mealies and dump them in the gutload. Sometimes they get caught in the screen, just pull them out and they dont get cut in 2.
