Need a good breeder reference...

restlesswind444 Jun 28, 2005 05:12 PM

I have recently decided to take the plunge into buying a gtp. I have done my research and am in the process of setting up a proper enclosure. I will not be ready to purchase an animal for another 2-3 weeks but was wondering if someone could refer me to a couple of trustworthy breeders. Apparently there are many out there with parasatized, poor quality, etc. animals. I have read in multiple places that the biggest challenge is choosing the right breeder, so anyone who might point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading,
Chris

there are plenty of other good breeders on this site, however i'm not gonna mention any names becuase i know i'll leave someone out. im just sayin marcial because i've done business with him.

Marcial is a good breeder I agree. I breed gtps and I am sure that alot of other people on here do as well. But since its your first go to chondroweb.com and check out some of those guys. And when your buying from a breeder that is new or not nationally known which have the potential to produce just as nice snakes, ask for pics of parents, hatch date, clutch mate photos, feed and shed records. Any good breeder will give you that.
Also if you find someone that is local ask to come to their facility and see the parents and perhaps the collection.
Also since its your first start with a yearling that has already been established that way you can stand a few small flaws, temperature fluctuation, humidity off balance, little things you just have to learn as you go.
I will say though ask around here on the forum if anybody is breeding any or has any avaliable.
I have one gravid female as we speak and all my others are already sold or spoken for, But I know Brandon Osbourne, Will Bird and a few others that are on here occassionally breed as well.
I wish you luck in finding your first baby.

Thanks for the mention Chad. I just found out Marcial sold out on his Greta clutch. I've been so busy with animals myself, it's been hard to keep up with everyone else's success. I had 2 clutches this year and ended up with a total of 16 babies. Unfortunately, one clutch didn't end up the way I had hoped. There's always next year.

Just look for the DEDICATED BREEDERS and you can't go wrong. Be sure to start with an animal that has had at least 15-20 meals without any problems.

On a side note, not all designer animals come from extreme looking adults. Here are some examples....
These are my original adult Sedgewick Zoo breeders.
Male attempting to breed a jungle carpet.

Female brooding her first clutch in 2001.

Pretty normal looking adults if you ask me. The male is a little nicer than the pics show, but still nothing to write a book about. Here are some of their offspring as adults and sub-adults that I've produced.
Velveeta 2001....became a daddy this year.

Sprite 2001....but deceased 2004.

2003 offspring....similar to Velveeta.

Summer 2003

Sprite II 2003

2004 now 15 months old.

And another average looking 2004.

Sorry for all the pics. I'm just showing them off. Good luck in the search and with your new found addiction.

All of the advice in this particular thread is sound and good. Imo you are doing well, by first asking questions. Remember, there is nothing wrong with asking questions.

I agree in that NOT ALL deadicated breeders have been mentioned here...a few yes...but clearly not all. I would suggest you take a visit to "both" ChondroWeb and the Morelia viridis Forum and do some reading thru both site's Classifieds Section....then contact several breeders....and find the one that appeals to you...in terms of snake appeal...snake cost...customer service....etc...then make YOUR decision based on your feelings. it is very much like choosing a spouse; there are plenty out there so ya need to try a few out

Personally, I have a number of yearlings available...but my strong advice would be to review the Classifieds and get in touch with some deadicated breeders!

Good Luck...and remember...ask questions!!!!
