New GTP not eating

nortz Jun 28, 2005 05:31 PM

I work at a pet store the specializes in reptiles. For the last month or so I have been wanting a young GTP that was a recent aquisition. I had fed it twice, so I know it was eating ok. As it was probably a wild caught, the owner and I dosed it with the appropriat amount of panacure. I have had it home for 2 weeks now and it hides and will not eat. I ame curently keeping it with a jungle carpet python in a tall vivarium. It provides lots of habitat for both. The JCP has been living in it for months and is eating ok. I have had the JCP for 6 months or more and have kept the temp and humidity at proper levels.

Is it the cage mate that is bothering the GTP, or has it not adapted yet?

BTW, I have Gregg Maxwell's book., and have read it.

Thanks,

I moved the GTP to the old enclosure that the JCP was in. I thought that having to share quarters was stressing the GTP out. We'll see if it solves the problem.

Problem solved. I moved the GTP into the cage that formerly held the JCP. The next morning it was on the perch and 2 days later I fed it and it ate. I guess it didn't like having a cage mate.

Congratulations!

I just saw your post (I guess this section of the forum is not nearly as busy as the main one) and that was my first inclination.

There have been numerous posts about keeping snakes together and one of the more common answers is the potential for a lot of stress. Even with same species this can happen, and especially with different types. The GTP could have been quite scared of the much more active JCP.

I'm glad you solved the problem, and I'd bet your GTP is too!

Regards,

Bill

Thanks. I guess I'll have to get more Jungle carpets to fill the large vivarium.
