Rodent Holding Bins

sincityretics Jul 14, 2003 08:23 PM

Anyone have any decent plans for a mouse/rat holding bin. Plus does anyone know if freedom Breeder still makes the holding bins thanks

to the best of my knowledge..

but what are you wanting to hold in them? rats?.. mice?..

you could BUILD a holding setup yourself for 1/4th the cost of the freedom breeder setups, and put that money into more snakes! LOL

if you are holding mice.. you could build some type of setup.. (never really thought this one out myself)..

for rats.. you could build a rack using the "jumbo" cement mixing tubs you can get at homedepot..

there was an add in the classifieds for a rodent holding setup for sale by Mike Wilbanks, of Constrictors Unlimited.. take a peak at it (in the cages/heat/light classifieds).. it should give you a basic idea of where to start..

best of luck

i use rubbermade or sterilite plastic tubs with part of the lid cut out and screen screwed over it... it looks like this..

inside theres just bedding and food.. and the mice/rats of course

the lid of the tub.. i like these rubbermade "snap" ones.. they leave room for the water bottle and stay on pretty good.

to cut out the inside i just cut an X in it with a razor and used tip snips to cut around the line i drew.. the screen just gets held on by a nut and screw..

for the water bottle i just drilled a hole at the right level and the wire that came with the bottle hold it on.. (sorry its sideways i forgot to flip it..)

i have two of those made for my mice... i did it this way because i dont have enough groups to make a rack practical but glass tanks suck to clean.. these just shake them out and once in a while hose them out... no problem

this is a bigger one i built tonight for my rats.. same idea just on a bigger scale. this one is a sterilite.. the water bottle keeps the lid from fitting on the way it should be, which isnt really a problem but the rubbermade tub lids dont even touch the bottles, so i recommend them.

good luck building these, if it is what youre looking for.... they work great for me. if you have any questions about them feel free to email me... dave

A little coat hanger wire will make a bottle hanger that sticks out a hair farther and clears the top
