Honestly they are pretty much the same unit just a different foot print.. The Johnsons does have a better response time as it has a metal probe... Check out the link to the compairisons...

I can't see much difference. One thing I like better about the Ranco is that when you set your temperature differential to one degree it only drops one degree from your temperature set point before it comes back on. The Johnson when set the same way, drops two degrees before it comes back on. Because of that difference, the temps stay more consistant with the Ranco.
