3 Foot Alligator N California public pond = Help please?

jasonw Jun 28, 2005 10:49 PM

Ok here is my problem. I am use to catching small to medium lizards all over the west coast, Been maintaining many species for many many years as some of you may already know. I was recently asked to remove an Alligator that had been released into a small public pond here in N. California. I went out today armed with nothing but my digital camera. I did not plan on locating anything but maybe finding some slides in the mucky muddy bank or some sort of evidence at all since this was a 3rd hand report. I did not find a thing out there. The people that reported it swear they say a 3 foot Alligator and the agency that is responsible for the property are also very convinced that it is there. Is there anything I can do to gather some sort of evidence? I really am to busy to spend several days out there waiting and watching. As I said it is a public area so any traps would most likely be tampered with. With the reports the roads leading to it have been chained off but it has not stopped people from driving around the chains. Any help on what to look for or the proper way to gather any sort of evidence would be great.

P.S. Both the DOFG and the local Animal Control refuse to help this is why I was contacted becasue I am the local reptile guru

Most crocodile biologists search for them at night looking for eyeshine. Check out: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/UW/UW19800.pdf
