Brown snake babies (Storeria dekayi)

Dragondreams Jun 29, 2005 06:59 AM

One of my brown snakes gave birth yesterday. 11 healthy babies. I knew they would be very small but I never imagined that they could be that small! Between 3 and 4 inches and almost as thin as a needle. I've tried minced worms, and I'll try minced grubs since they didn't eat the worms. I'll even try feeding them baby guppies if that doesn't work. Anyone know of anything else I could try feeding them?

What are you going to feed them? What would be small enough that they would like?

Well there eating tiny worms, slugs and fruit flies at the moment. and are eating fairly well, and they are tiny lol the largest one is about 1 1/2 inches and the smallest is really tiny im afraid to hold the little jokers lol.

Where in the world did you find worms small enough for snakes that tiny??? I used the smallest I could find and still had to mince them to get pieces that were as small as their heads. I'll just have to keep trying different things. Slugs are next by the sound of things. Mine are about 3 inches long, some might be 3 1/2. Their heads are about the size of the head on a straight pin. If they can find food in the wild, I ought to be able to find it for them, I'm at least as smart as they are..LOL. Good luck with your babies.

11 is quite alot, even from the largest of females the most I've ever gotten was 14. You are trying to feed them way too early. Put all of the babies into a container with moist moss, and let them shed. After about a week, try feeding them. They will take little slugs, small worms, and have quite the appetite on them.

All but 2 or 3 shed completely right after birth. I ended up changing their water 4 or 5 times yesterday to get the skins out of it. They were just floating there. I thought as soon as they shed it was time to feed them their first time?

Wait a week. Let them adjust to life.

I've heard that they like slugs, so maybe you could try some really tiny ones. I don't know where you're located. I'm in CA and I go out at night with a flashlight and collect slugs from the dandelions growing in my lawn for my sharp-tailed. This has been the easiest / most reliable method of finding slugs for me.

Thanks, I'll try that. You are the second person that told me to try those. The other was a vet, so it must be the right idea.
