Iguanas in New York?

girlzilla Jun 29, 2005 08:58 AM

I have a question:

It's a possibility that I might move to New York City sometime in the future.

However, it's my understanding that iguanas are illegal in all 5 bouroughs of the city. I would NEVER consider giving Bud up, ever!

Does anyone know anyone who had to move to NYC with an iguana? Is it possible that the city might make exceptions, or allow special licensing? Or is the law just not strictly enforced except when the animal is a nuisance?

This "no iguana rule" seems really draconian to me, pun intended.

Contact me at virtuoso7_@yahoo.com if you'd like to respond privately.

No exceptions. If you are reported, Bud is gone.
Is it possible for you to live on Long Island or just outside the city?

Aren't IG's banned in San Francisco also? My Mother in law saw a tv show where someone in SF got caught and had to get rid of their IG. I lived in SF for a few years and never heard of such law. I now live in the East Bay close to East Bay Vivarium so I should be ok.

Yes, it is true, despite efforts to repeal it. Some areas enforce it very strictly (including immediate destruction), others have more important issues. You might also consider living across the river in NJ where igs are welcome.

I guess I'll have to live on the outskirts, then. Which is fine with me, since I don't like NYC very much, but I think my boyfriend might be disappointed. The move would be pretty far in the future, if it happened at all, but it doesn't hurt to plan ahead...

To paraphrase an old 60's song, "I don't care what they say, I won't live in a city without iggys . . . ".

You shouldn't have to worry about it unless you take him out in the park or you have police officers in your house often. I do not understand why they would care...its not like an iguana could ever escape and live in NY. I say keep the ig and the house

Laws like this frustrate me to no end... We can't take our snake out to enjoy the sun because it's illegal to have pythons and boas in town. (also ferrets, skunks, pigs and just about every other exotic species). We've been advised that it's really only enforced on a complaint basis, but there's still a risk. We've considered going to city hall to try and get them to change the law, as I know there are many people in town who keep ball pythons, but I'm concerned that they'll automatically investigate whoever brings the issue up, assuming that we have animals we shouldn't.
