red-tailed green rat housing

schwindt14 Jun 29, 2005 09:35 AM

I'm purchasing an adult red-tailed green rat and was wondering exactly how much room this snake would need. I recently built an arboreal type setup using about a 40 gallon sterilite container but I'm guessing thats a bit small. I like the sterilite setup though because of how easy it is to regulate temp and humidity. So do I need to make a new cage?

I have kept numerous imports of this species in the last few years. I don't have a lot of time right now, but in general fresh imports do better in smaller rather than larger cages. They just seem to calm down and eat better this way. My quarantine boxes are 31"x17"x12" - LxWxH.

Use your Sterilite cage and think about building something bigger in a few months. Although I have kept and bred Gonyosoma in 40 gallon tanks so it might not be absolutely necessary.

Feel free to e-mail me so we can chat about these snakes more.

Thanks a lot. And also if I were to get a pair of these for possibly breeding in the future, is it better to keep them apart or to let them live together in the smaller setup? And chris what is your email?

The most successful breeders of this genus keep their snakes together in small groups or pairs. However, I have obtained fertile eggs from snakes that I only paired up temporarily for breeding. I do plan on keeping them in groups once I build some larger cages.

You can click on my blue high lighted name in this post. That will open up Kingsnake's messenger service and you can write me that way.
