Feeding the food....anyone have any tips?

AlteredMind99 Jun 29, 2005 09:51 AM

Well it seems like louise prefers mealies over crickets so i am going to start gutloading my mealies as well as my crickets. i was planning on emptying the contaner of mealies into a tupperware container and feeding them potatoes and fresh veggies, but i have a few quick questions...

1. Do they need a water source?
2. I have heard that the beetles eat a different food than the worms, is this true? If so, what is the best thing to feed the beetles?
3. Since they are probably going to breed anyway i am wondering if there is anything i need to do other than just keep them fed to ensure breeding. Do the beetles need to be seperated from the worms or anything, or will they just breed and grow on there own?

If anyone wants to quickly outline how they "keep" their mealies it would be greatly appreciated

TIA

The olny question I have an answer for is if they crickets need water.
If you feed them potatoes, then you dont need water. Thats what my local petshop told me atleast.

Hi there =)

I keep mine in a 20 gallon with oatmeal, milk powder, and potatoes and they do very well. I know some peopl euse other "substrates" for them to feed from, but this works quite nicely for me. They don't need a fluid source as long as there are potatoes for them eat.

Hope that helps!

I don't know if it actually does anything, but I figured it couldn't hurt to try to fortify the food source with calcium =)

I think I read it somewhere a few years ago, I will see if I can find anything more on it.

Hi,
I don't know if you have seen this web sight but it has some good info.

http://www.drgecko.com/superworms/

It is for superworms but you can easily apply it to meal worms.

Thanks,
bob
