Is my new Red Eyed Tree Frog sick???

cloud_weaver Jun 29, 2005 09:59 AM

I just got a juvenile red eyed tree frog on Sunday. He's a small, brightly coloured cutie named Petrie, but I was looking at him today and later in the afternoon I noticed some white spots on his back. I'm positive they weren't there earlier in the morning. I'm really scared that he's sick, and don't want to loose him so soon. I had planned on buying him a friend this Friday, but don't want to put the other GETF at risk.

What are the white spots? Do I need to be concerned? Is there anything I can do to remove them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!

Cloudie

Are the spots mites? Do they move? RETF do tend to get white spots from their genetic background (maybe you just didnt notice them earlier). If you can post a pic I could give you a 100% if they are natural. Im not sure how they get the spots but if they were related to genetics they are completely harmless.

I honestly haven't tried to remove them, because I don't want to hurt him. Here's a picture...

Is your frog wild-caught or captive bred? Looks happy and healthy at the moment, although from the pic those spots do look like they may not be pigmentation. You may try "lightly" rolling a damp cotton-tipped applicator over them to lift them off. I wouldn't be overly concerned, but if any other symptoms begin such as inappetence, lethargy, an increase in occurance, open sores ect. then a vet visit is warranted. It is a good idea to find a herp vet before they usage is necessary, and I would keep any new frogs quarantined for both frogs sake

Petrie and his tank-mate are both CB, from the same breeder. The spots haven't come off, and he seems to be happy and healthy so I think he's fine. Thanks for the help! :D
