New morph success is almost always posted. But what about failed projects?

jmartin104 Jun 29, 2005 10:13 AM

Sure, you hear about the new SuperDiliiciousProtoPlasm ball but I'm just as interested in failed morph attempts. For example can the pied be crossed with anything? I'm SURE this has been attempted but has anything been produced? I can see some reasons for not advertising the failure. If, for example, the pied cannot be outcrossed, some might consider it a dead-end morph (not me personally - they are my favorite) and as a result, less valuable. I started my pied project with the intent to cross with other morphs. If the pied can not be crossed, I still would have invested, but perhaps, differently. Hmmmmm.....

Someone please show me an albino pied!

I think the question you asked will take time to answer. One in sixteen is real hard to do. Most new morphs that are produced are using Codominant morphs.
Example:
How many snows have been produced vs. the lucy?

But I still wonder about the pied.

Not sure what a 'failed project' would be, other than a clutch of normal ball pythons. An albino pied would be interesting to see..but out of my price range anyway LOL. I can manage buying a couple of 100% het pieds, thats about it..though I would love to have one or two pieds in my collection. I just don't think the market for them up here (ie canada) is that strong...there are a few breeders here that produce pieds, though no clue if they are easy to sell or if the breeders have difficulty moving them.

Eventually we are going to get to the point where two of these traits are on the same chromosome and they don't act like the good old fashion mendelian genetics we are all used to. As far as the piebald working with other traits, it should and this is why. The piebald gene is similar to the calico gene in cats. Certain areas are turned on while others are turned off for pigmentation early on in development. All other cells deriving from a cell turned off will then be white. As long as the traits, piebald and amelanism, are not on the same chromose it should work because in the area that is pigmented it will just not have melanin. If they are indeed on the same chromosome we will need to wait for a crossover event, not uncommon, to happen in order to get these two traits on the same chromosome.

Anyone know how many chromosomes a ball pyton has? Sorry for the longwindedness. Also if anyone has extra albinos and pieds they would like to donate I will take this project on. LOL

It will be interesting to see. I hope to start a piebino project next season.

I've not yet found a listing explicitly for ball pythons but 36 seems to be a common chromosome number for other snake species I've seen listed including several boas and pythons. I saw a few 34's and even some real odd ones like 28 and 46 but most where 36. We may be getting close to having 36 different proven morphs so I think we are destined to eventually run into some linking when trying to combine them.

All we need is 18 morphs because 36 is the diploid number. Each animal has two copies or each, so it should pop up soon. It should pop up soon, hopefully not for the piebino because I would love to see one of those.
