pellets...mmmm

lele Jun 29, 2005 01:55 PM

Darwin wouldn't eat pellets when I first got him so I forgot about them. I recently got some adult size (Rep-cal brand) and moistened one green one and man - he loved it!! what a great thing to keep on hand!

Hey lele! Mine are the same way. Well, most of the beardies we currently have will eagerly eat pellets, and one dragon in particular will avoid his salads at all costs if he sees those colorful balls in there! LOL

I've had better luck feeding the juvenile pellets to my adult dragons. They don't seem to like the large size of the adult pellets. If you do get some juvi pellets, try bouncing some around in Darwin's cage. They bounce right off of the padded shelf liner! This really gets my beardies going! They take off from their basking spot to chase down the dry pellets. They seem to love the crunch they make! Kinda like a big juicy roach.

Hugs,
Veronica

yeah, it looked a bit big after soaking it and he eyeballed the first one as if to figure out the best approach! I broke the next ones in half and he didn't hesitate a bit

I have been a bit absent from the forum - how is your rescued girl?

I rescued two females from the same lady, and one passed away shortly after I received her. The one with the swollen eyes - it was so sad. But I'm glad she's not suffereing anymore.

The other one is doing as well as can be expected. She has severe MBD. It's to the point that she drags herself around and doesn't have the strength to pick herself up. She walks around on her wrists sometimes and it's so sad. She gets a daily dose of liquid calcium (NeoCalglucon). Man that's potent stuff! I'm considering selling smaller bottles on my website for beardies with MBD. The big bottles are like $45 and are enough to treat 25 beardies!

Her poo had some crystalization in the urates, the vet thinks its because of the calcium. I started giving her Pedialyte and the crystalization stopped.

Thanks for asking about her. I hope to get some photos of her up here soon!

Hugs,
Veronica

I'm sorry to hear about the one you lost. She was the one I was thinking of - didn't realize you had gotten two. It must just kill you to see her suffering like that but at least she is now in good, caring hands.

Yes, the NcG is potent stuff. I use it for LUna when she has her gravid/laying/calcium issues and it can be hard to balance. I get the 1 oz bottles from my vet for about $10 or $12 (I think). Just make sure that anyone who buys it understands its use and doesn't overdo it. But for serious situations it is damn good stuff!

Yeah, the Neocalglucon is good stuff. But I wanted to double check what I've read about it. Can you tell me the dosage that your vet told you to give Luna? It's probably very similar for a bearded dragon. I was told to give a 400 gram dragon about .5 cc's everyday. Is the crystalization a bad sign?

Thanks!

He dosed her at .01cc per 10g 2x daily - that was for severe depletion. So when she was 90g, she got .09cc 2x day.

I am not sure about the crystalization. I would ask on the cham forum (or here) to see what others say. kinyonga, twinoats, Morgana, Tyler & Carlton and some others on the cham forum were helpful and knowledgeable with Luna re: her whole calcium issue this pat winter/spring when she developed MBD. It was baffling all the way around - even to the vet - she just sucks so much C from her bones when she is gravid. Broke my heart

What does the vet say about the crystals?
