I followed my own advice

Burmaboy Jun 29, 2005 07:59 PM

In an earlier post I was curious to see if anyone had ever experienced a reliably feeding burm turn off and refuse food?
In my case rabbits.
I followed my own advice on feeding...starving them out until they decide to eat.
It worked. This particular snake had'nt fed in a month. Woke right up tonight as I unbagged everyone's food tonight. His small rabbit included. A 1 pounder. Small by this guy's normal meals. He usually eats two 1 1/2 to 2lb rabbits every two weeks.
I still feel the problem is this load of rabbits. He goes by them as he hunts. Something he never did until I got my last order. This order was lost by UPS and was partly thawed when I finally got it. This is only a hypothesis but I feel freezing partially thawed prey items had something to do with this.
Anyway...I digress.
When your burm stops feeding, or refuses to feed, do not panic.
Dont try making them eat remove refused food and try again next feeding cycle. This once again has worked for me.
And not just on burms.

i have 2 ideas..one of which you almost hit at...i have gotten an order of rats that my burm was hesistant to eat, i also noticed that this particular bunch of rats also smelled more like waste (urine, feces..whateva)than most of them i gotten...anohter is that you siad the order was lost by UPS and partially thawed when you received them..do you think that the rabbits could have started to decay a bit and the burm can sense/smell it?

Its hard to say...most of my various species of snakes ae garbage cans, but my burms have always fed trouble free.
It might be a coincedence that this began wit my last order of rabbits, but I'm not so sure.
I also notice it takes much longer to thaw out rabbits than rats
(duh)...so that I can feed everybody at once, I keep the rabbits inder heat lamps longer.
Maybe lately with this last order it just makes them smell worse by heating them longer? Again, I would attribute this to the partially thawed rabbits...however...no problems with the rats and mice also in that order. They are fed on problem free.
I guess next time I get a partially thawed shipment...
refuse it? Maybe?
I wont be able to test my spoiled rabbit theory until my next order...late August.
