jovy Jun 29, 2005 10:08 PM

some info, red tail about 22-26 inches, eatting small mice,

today i put my red tail in an empty 10 gal put in the white mouse, and put it in my closet so it could have some darkness, i wacthed the snake grab him and start to strangle him i left for 2-3 min when i came back he was still holding onto the mouse ,seemed dead, so i left him alone ,
I came to check on him about 3 hours later and i saw that he was rubbing his face on the bottom of the tank, as in trying to scrath himself,or trying to find away out, i then noticed there was blood on the bottom of the tank and his bottom lip is pushed up,

I know ,Iknow i shouldnt have fed live, AHHH,

What should i do? i have him in a tank with a hide and and a 25W reptile nitelite

I'd say get a vet.
Until then, post some pics so we can see what we're up against.

I see you've already corrected your act... so i won't yell at you feeding live is the last resort before forcefeeding.

Cheers.

see a vet for sure, sounds like a broken jaw from hitting the glass.if you must feed live whack the feeder on the head and place it in the middle of a box so a miss won't hit the sides causing injury.

Feeding live isnt that bad of a thing, i feed all my snakes live but i watch them very very carefully, and i have tons of snakes... Im gonna have to start getting frozen though.

If you have never seen rodents bite your "tons" of snakes, then you aren't watching very carefully.

I have seen many rodents bite snakes during constriction. The result is usually negligible, but if they happen to get some important part in their mouths during the struggle, look out.

Watching very, very carefully won't help a bit if the rodent ends up with its head next to the snake's face while being constricted and it bites the eye, for example.
What good would witnessing that event do for the snake?
