Breeding snake questions

kinglover Jun 30, 2005 12:21 AM

ok, i have a brooks kingsnake that i absolutely love, she is about 27 inches right now, so she is not yet ready to breed. the problem is that is is canabalistic to other snakes and i have never bred snakes before. not a good combination. i would like to breed snakes though, and i want to start out with a small, inexpensive snake species. i looked at various garter snakes and the rough green snake. somthng full grown under 3 feet would be a good size, and somthing that can be with other snakes and not eat others. any advice on a good breeding snake and breeding in general, would be appreciated

From the size aspect, a plains garter or one of the subspecies of common garter (Thamnophis sirtalis) could work. Another possibility is the African house snake.

You might also go to the kingsnake forum and ask how those guys prevent their kings from chowing down on each other during breeding season.

Good luck.

I haven't bred yet, but will be breeding some milks/kings soon. I wouldn't really worry to much about canabalism with adults. I've done a fair amount of reading, and if you feed seperatly u shouldn't have problems with adults. I would still house seperatly, just for maintance (although the author of tha avs kingsnake guide houses pairs and seperates for feeding). But you shouldn't have to worry about them eating each other if there both fed well and fed seperatly. (from what i've read ).

well i think i will end up breeding Northern Brown Snakes, i really am facinated about them, and my kingsnake would be such a big snake to breed and i would have to incubate eggs and such, as i wouldnt with the brown snake

ok, im back to my original question, is there any other snakes that you guys suggest to be a good breeding snake, and i would be able to make a profit off of?
