West Texas...the good, the bad and the ugly!

antelope Jun 30, 2005 02:53 AM

Okay, I got some pics up and a short herpin' trip in after I dumped all my boy scouts at summer camp! Went from Kerrville,Texas area to alternaland to make amends for my poor showing last time. I vowed to bring back a gray band king but...steerike two! Not a total loss, as I did bring back (good)the biggest suboc I know of... a sumo of a suboc...sumoc, yeah that's the ticket! Serpwidgets puts it at 71.4". Also saw a Texas horned lizard, Sceloporus poinsettia, a Central Texas whipsnake,(bad) 1 dor bullsnake, and 1 dor atrox.(ugly) Got me a real flat doughnut and a busted jack to boot. Spent Monday checking out some of the Big Bend and headed home to try again another day. Here's the suboc.

Masticophis taeniatus girardi. This guy was stuck in a drainage ditch east of Del Rio. I saw this black flailing thing sliding down and trying to leap up to get a hold, but he would slide back down again. And at 70 m.p.h., my peripheral vision is still pretty good!
