green frog left my pond??

dragoncjo Jun 30, 2005 07:36 AM

In 2001 I stocked my pond with green frog tadpoles. Well only one made it through this last winter and has been doing great all spring and summer. However the other night we had torrential rains, and I know during heavy rain he likes to leave the pond for the night. However it has been a few days since then and I can't seem to find him. I normally find him in my bigger pond at night and during the day he hangs out in the feeder pond. Just wondering if a adult green frog will search out a mate on rainy nights like this?? How could I coax him back to my pond?? Should I play music of frog's chirping? Also is it normal for a frog to leave a pond he has been living in for 4 years?? thanks

My bullfrog does the same thing. After heavy rains, I won't see him for a day or two. I always feel terrible and sad, and then I wake up at night to hear him boasting calls to my delight. Don't worry, he'll probably come back. I don't want to worry you, but if your neigborhood has lots of cats, raccoons, or large snakes, he may be a goner. WE have had much better luck keeping frogs near our pond after putting in more bushes and ground cover, so they can hide and find more bugs. Hope your frog comes back!!!

I have no idea what's going on. It's more fun that way.

Yeah I'm worried about the cats more than anything else. Hopefully it comes back but he has been gone for five days, have a feeling something got him.

I'm sorry to hear that. YOu could try putting a net over your next pond to prevent herons, cats, coons etc. from getting to your pond. And make sure the frog has lots of plants to hid in/around. Hope you can get a frog to stay! I had to work at it with several frogs till i finally got it right. so good luck!!
