Tiger feeding help, please

buffysmom Jun 30, 2005 09:55 AM

How & what do you guys feed your Tigers? I tried feeding my new tiger a freshly-shed mealworm & a small nightcrawler. He appeared interested in both, rubbing his nose on them, etc. but he didn't bite at them. Is he maybe just not hungry? I caught him at night 2 nights ago, so I suppose he might have stuffed himself already before I caught him.
How often should I feed him & should I leave the bugs in there to dig themselves into the Ecoearth, or take them out?

He may not be hungry yet. Most don't eat right after being acquired. Keep trying. Mealworms aren't the greatest, but earthworms are a fantastic food. I sometimes leave worms to burrow into the dirt (I use organic topsoil (NO manure!) mixed with eco-earth). Then the sals can a.)hunt them on their own, or b.) the worms at least make the soil more natural. Stick some plants in there. I use pothos ivy in mine. Also make sure he has places to hide, or things to burrow under. And keep the soil moist.

They love earthworms is he cool enough to warm ESP just recently aquired they may not eat. Is temp 65 or so they prefer that.
I like regular soil as its softer than eco earth and mine seem to bury in it easier.
Yours is huge.

How do I know if it's a girl or boy?
He is huge, huh!? He's got to be near the limit I find on the net- around 12 or 13 inches. I should measure him. I do have several silk plants in there & 2 hide spots, one large piece of cork bark & one black food container. All my critters are obsessed w/ the black food containers! I swear, I give them those & they never come out of them. Probably because they're nice & dark.
I just tested the temp, it's 71. And he popped his head out of the dirt from 1/2 way under his house, 1/2 way out. He's darn cute I have to say!
Thanks everyone. I figure it's probably a newly-acquired animal thing & he'll eat in a few days when he's more comfy.

OK, clearly I have no measuring sense. I measured him & he's about 8 inches, a good 4 inches shy of my guess. He just looks so darn big!

That's still a good sized tiger.

They do like to burrow, so I like to use the cocobark mixed with topsoil, as this makes a more sturdy burrow.

To tell if it's male or female, look between the back legs. If there's a large lump or swelling (called a cloaca), it's a boy. If it's lacking, it's probably a girl. Take a pic and I could tell you if you can't decide.

Thanks, I think he's huge. He is a "He". I looked a few days ago, say a bulge & said, are you a boy, then? So I guess he is My husband's calling him 'lil Tiger, his take off of 'lil Brother from the homestar runner website. So far I'm just calling him Tiger. Any other, more creative name suggestions?

Lol, anything you want! I named my axolotls after vacuum cleaners (initially, their names changed with their developing adult characteristics) because of their eating habits. I've got 3 Taricha granulosa, P.J. Danny (Devito (he's rather small and fat)), and Kate (Moss, because she sometimes refuses to eat for days at a time and gets rather skinny). I named one of my Triturus karelinii Miguel, after my cousin's boyfriend, because he always attacked the other ones and was a general jerk, even though he was smaller, just like Miguel.

Lol that was funny . I hope your cousin ended it with Miguel he sounds terrible lol.

Actually, she just took a bus from Michigan to Florida (where he's been working for a year, when he was suppose to be there for 6 weeks), and she wants to marry him and have babies. Mind you, she doesn't have custody of her first daughter because she's not capable of taking care of children. Oh well.

Oh gosh sorry to hear that. Sometimes people just dont think things out.
