Nesting season update

Jesse S. Jun 30, 2005 01:09 PM

Today one of my girls layed a whopping 9 eggs! A new record for any of my boxers. Among the 3 females that have layed for me so far I have 19 eggs. Their output this season in terms of total eggs laid per clutch is significantly greater than in past years. I think it may have something to do w/ their late start as the weather in CT this spring was cold and lousy well into May. Should be interesting to see if all or any double clutch or have consolidated all their energy into single clutches.

Hey Jesse,
Are you in baja now? That's a lot of eggs for sure, congrats. The wild lutes here are just barely even considering nesting, gotta wait until we have one good rain.

I've noticed something similar happening here in VA: two of our girls have produced larger than average clutches also. One was not, by any means, a record setter, but since she's only ever laid 3 or 4 at a time, a clutch of 5 was an up-tick.
The other female has laid 6 eggs each time quite reliably, so when, a couple of weeks ago, she laid an eye-popping 9 eggs, we wondered the same thing, about whether or not she'll lay again.
Glad to hear of another member of the 'Nine at a Time Club'.

Steph,

Very interesting indeed. Should be neat to see if they double or triple clutch. Some of my girls have already matched their reproductive output from last year in a single clutch this year. While the others, as in your case, have layed 1 or 2 more eggs than usual. All may be environmental responses but we'll see.

Jesse

PS - thanks for the warm welcome into the 9 eggs club.
