My Snake Sanctuary.....

Guy Scavone II Jun 30, 2005 02:27 PM

I have always been a huge fan of seeing pics of how people set up there snake basements/rooms/closets/facilities/call it what you will. I just love seeing how other people operate.

Also, with all of the posts about what caging to use and who uses what... I figured i'd share some pics I took a while back. I've since added an additional baby rack and a few more poly racks, but essentially it is still the same. It's amazing how much you really can fit in a small space.

I've tried soooooo many different types of cages over the past 6 years... and at the end of it all... Boaphiles are where i'm at. Every single snake I own is now housed in some form of Boaphile cage and I couldn't be happier.

The room that is pictured below is 12' X 16' and is a portion of my basement, for all you west-coasters a basement is under the house It really makes for a great snake room as the temperature in the basement NEVER changes... it makes no difference if it is 100 or -10 outside... it's always a constant 68-70. The room has its own seperate heating and is maintained at about 80 degrees. I also have an industrial type ventilation fan that exchanges the rooms air several times an hour and simply vents it right out of the house through a standard dryer vent.

Thanks for looking...

Very nice setup. Was size a determining factor is going with the boaphile cages? Have you tried visions? If so, what didn't you like about them.

Thanks and once again nice setup.

Guy Scavone II Jun 30, 2005 02:48 PM

Size was never an issue... both companies offer caging in just about any and every size you could ever need.

What it came down to was what you get for the price... the Boaphiles are unmatched in my opinion. I love the look of the cages, the heat being "part" of the cage, the way they stack... and they way they look as one big group. I'm yet to come up with a complaint for these cages and i'm incredibly picky.

Thanks...

Hey Guy,

you said you didn't have any complaints about the boaphiles, I've
noticed with mine in a stack of 4 that the bottom cage door gets stuck because of the weight from above. Do you ever have this problem? I wonder if it is just the weight of the snakes above or the weight of the ceramic water bowls I am using. I was thinking about trying to use a peice of wood as a support beam in the bottom cage if I have to. Didn't know if that was a common problem people have or not.
thanks.

April, I have them in stacks of 5 on top of a pedestal and there is no problem with the bottom cage at all? Maybe you have a larger size? Mine are 421's.... I'd say give Jeff a call and let him know whats up.

I have stacks of 4 421's with the bottom ones on some Mission style coffee tables I found at a local furniture store. The surface of the table is a tiny bit larger than the bottom of the 421. I use plastic dog bowls for water that are larger on the bottom. They are easy to clean and none of my boas have ever dumped them. If you are interested in them, email me and I'll tell you where I ordered them. They are very inexpensive.

Oh...and none of my lower cages have door issues.

you are either using large ceramic bowls, which are heavy, or maybe you just have large, heavy snakes in them?
I usually arrange my heaviest towards the bottom or right on the bottom..
one stack does have 6-7 footers throughout (I stack them 6 high) and this still doesn't happen.

Maybe if you rearrange the snakes a bit it should perform better? just a thought..

that's kind of what I was thinking.. the weight of everything.
2 of the females are just over 20lbs and they are in the
top and 3rd cages, I could try moving the biggest girl to the
bottom, I just like to keep the girls up higher so I can see
them easier. I guess I could get a table like Linda said and
raise them up a little. The water bowls are pretty big and
heavy and usually they are in the middle of the cage, so that
is probably the main problem. I'll get some lighter
plastic ones.
thanks!

Thanks for sharing the photos. I am also a huge fan of snake room photos. Your set up looks great!

Ji_ Jun 30, 2005 04:24 PM

The certainly look great, thats for sure!

AbsoluteApril Jun 30, 2005 05:36 PM

that is exactly where I hope to be in the next few years!
I still have lots of misc. cages but so far I favor the boaphile and baars (herpcages) the most.
Wish we had basements out here in the west, that's for sure.
Thanks for sharing your setup Guy!
This is me in my favorite room.. the snake room

sorry about that, hope I didn't get you in trouble!
You should see the evil looks I get if I talk to another herper on the phone "what do you have to say to some guy for over an hour?!" lol
I just moved some stuff around in the room, so I'll try to get more pics soon. My next big purchase is going to be a stand alone freezer I think.

take it easy!

caging and realize how you can fit so much in that amount of space with them.
Some people only have 4-8 snakes in that same space.. lol

Let me see if I can find my pics.. somewhat similar!

I love the basement explanation.. lol...
